Awami League leader killed by her husband

The husband has been accused of hacking to death an Awami League leader over a family quarrel in the DOHS area of ​​Pallabi, Dhaka. The deceased was identified as Umama Begum Kanak, 42, a member of the Awami League’s sub-committee on relief and social welfare and a former leader of the Bangladesh Students’ League.

On Friday (April 23) night, Umama was randomly stabbed in her home. He died at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital on Saturday morning. Police have arrested her husband Omar Farooq (51) in the incident.

Umama’s Brother in Law Babul said Omar was living with his wife and children in a flat on 11th Road, Avenue-4, DOHS, Pallabi, Dhaka. They have two children. The eldest daughter Fahima is an ‘O’ level and the son Wasif is a third class student. He returned to the country from Japan a long time ago a few years ago.

The couple had an argument on Friday night, police said. At one point, Omar took a pot from the kitchen and started harassing Umama. She fell to the floor covered in blood. DOHS authorities then rescued her and took her to a local private hospital.
When her condition deteriorated, She was rushed to Dhamek Hospital around 12pm. She died at 6:15 am on Saturday.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station Kazi Wazed Ali said Omar Farooq, a Japanese expatriate, came to the country five years ago and started his business. The husband and wife had a quarrel over the flat on Friday night. At one point, Omar stabbed his wife and injured her.
The OC also said that Umama’s body was recovered from Dhaka Medical College Hospital and sent to the morgue. After the autopsy, it was handed over to the relatives.

Omar has also been arrested on charges of murder and murder of his wife.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has expressed deep grief over the death of Umama Begum Konak, a member of the Awami League’s sub-committee on relief and social welfare and former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
In a condolence message on Saturday (April 24), Obaidul Quader conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues and admirers.

It is learned that around 12 pm on Friday, the husband asked his wife to write part of the flat in his name. When he did not agree, Omar Farooq brought a pot from the kitchen and stabbed his wife one after the other. Umama was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by her relatives and died at night.
